Is an underground fence or wireless fence system right for you? Let's begin with what the purpose of these systems is and how each system works. Both types of systems are designed to safely contain your pets on your property keeping them safe and out of harm's way. Each of these systems works in a relatively similar fashion however each system has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Both the Underground and wireless fence systems consist of a transmitter which transmits a signal picked up by a receiver collar worn by your pet. Each system can contain as many pets as you like as long as each pet is wearing a receiver collar. The major difference in the operation of the two systems is as follows;
With the underground fence system the transmitter sends a signal out through a wire commonly referred to as the boundary wire, which you route around your property. The boundary wire can be buried 1 to 2 inches below the ground or can be run above ground with the use of Sod Staples. As your pet approaches the boundary wire the receiver collar your pet is wearing begins to pick up the signal and the collar will emit an audible sound warning your pet that it is approaching the boundary limit. If your pet continues into the boundary correction zone the receiver collar will administer a safe but effective static correction until it returns.
With a wireless fence system all you have to do is plug the transmitter in, adjust the boundary, install the receiver collar on your pet or pets and you are ready to start training. The major difference in the operation of the wireless system is that the receiver collar is always receiving the radio signal until your pet begins to near the boundary that you've set. As the receiver begins to lose the signal it will emit an audible warning and once lost it will begin to administer the same safe static correction as the underground fence system.
The advantages and disadvantages of each system are as follows;
With the underground fence system you can enclose and contain your pet or pets in the smallest of city lots up to a farm of 100 acres depending on the particular system and your needs. You also have the ability to install the boundary wire in a variety of design layouts giving you the advantage of being able to restrict your pets from areas like swimming pools, gardens and flower beds. The only real disadvantage with the underground fence systems is the installation is, somewhat permanent or semi permanent as the boundary wire is either buried below grade or stapled to the top of the ground. If you were to move the boundary wire could be removed and taken with you, however it would probably be a whole lot easier to just purchase new wire.
With the wireless fence system the biggest advantage is its portability. Portability makes this system ideal for someone who is frequently traveling with their pets and desires to keep them contained and safe when they reach their destination. Also ideal for people taking their pets camping provided the campsite has electrical hookup. With a wireless fence there is no installation, just plug it in, set the boundary, place the receiver on your pet and you're done. The big disadvantage with the wireless fence systems is their limited containment area and no design flexibility. A couple of wireless fence systems available are the Instant Fence and the Stay
